Fixed-layout conversions

Complex non-fiction books with illustration- or design-heavy page layouts look better as fixed-layout conversions (also called fixed-format conversions).

A fixed-layout ebook has defined pages and can mirror a print book or PDF. It can be viewed everywhere except eInk Kindles (original, PaperWhite, Voyage). Fixed-layout ebooks appeal to readers, because they have more extensive interior design.

Genres that lend themselves to fixed-format conversion include:

Reflowable conversions

Reflowable ebooks have no fixed pages. Text and graphics reflow to fill the reader’s screen depending on font and size settings. If your book has a simple design that’s mainly text, a reflowable ebook conversion is a good choice, because it can be viewed on all tablets and e-readers, including the eInk Kindles.

Genres usually done in reflowable formats include:

• Novels
• Short stories & other fiction
• Dictionaries
• Simple non-fiction books with few graphic elements

MOBI format (for all Amazon Kindle e-readers)

EPUB3 for distribution through Apple iBooks, Barnes and Noble Nook, Kobo and all marketplaces EXCEPT Amazon.
